Home Sleep Study: Patient Information Sheet
1) What is a home sleep study?
A home sleep study is a test that measures your breathing, oxygen levels, heart rate, and sleep patterns while you sleep in your own bed.
It is commonly used to diagnose sleep apnoea and other breathing-related sleep disorders. The study uses a small portable monitoring device that you wear overnight at home.
2) What happens during a home sleep study?
You will be given a home sleep study kit and instructions on how to use it.
- The equipment usually includes a small monitor, a finger probe to measure oxygen levels, and sensors placed on your chest or around your nose.
- Before going to sleep, you will set up the equipment as instructed.
- The device records information while you sleep overnight.
- In the morning, you remove the equipment and return it as directed.
The test is painless and does not involve needles. You should try to sleep as normally as possible.
3) Recovering from a home sleep study
Recovery is simple.
- You can remove the equipment in the morning.
- There are no restrictions on activities, and you can return to normal daily routines immediately.
- A specialist will review the recorded data and discuss the results with you at a later appointment.
4) Risks of a home sleep study
Home sleep studies are very safe.
Possible minor issues include:
- Mild skin irritation from sensors or adhesive tape
- Discomfort wearing the equipment
- Incomplete data if sensors move during sleep, which may mean the test needs to be repeated
There are no serious risks associated with a home sleep study.
