What is geriatric medicine?

Geriatric medicine focuses on the care of older people who may have multiple health concerns, changes in mobility or memory, or increased vulnerability to illness. Care is centred on understanding how medical conditions, medications and daily function interact as we age.

Our team takes a whole-person approach, looking beyond individual diagnoses to support physical health, cognitive wellbeing, safety and independence.

When you might need to see a geriatrician

You may benefit from seeing a geriatrician if you or a family member have noticed changes in memory, thinking, movements, functional ability or general health that are beginning to affect everyday life.

A specialist review is also recommended if you:

  • Need assessment for memory concerns or changes in behaviour
  • Experience episodes of confusion or delirium
  • Are becoming frailer or finding it harder to recover from illness
  • Have had falls or feel unsteady on your feet
  • Have osteoporosis or concerns about bone strength
  • Take several medications and would benefit from a medication review
  • Need support before or after surgery, including orthogeriatric care
