About Dr Rajith Mendis
Dr Rajith Mendis is an experienced Head & Neck Surgeon and Surgical Oncologist with extensive subspecialty training in head and neck cancer, endocrine surgery and microvascular reconstruction.
He completed his MBBS at the University of New South Wales before undertaking general surgery training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where he obtained Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (FRACS) in 2019.
Dr Mendis undertook post-fellowship subspecialty training as the Head and Neck and Surgical Oncology Fellow at Westmead Hospital. He then completed further advanced training in Head and Neck Surgery and microvascular reconstruction at Wollongong Hospital and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.
He holds a public appointment at Westmead Hospital, where he participates in the Head and Neck MDT, Melanoma MDT, Thyroid MDT and Sarcoma MDT. He also operates at Westmead Private Hospital and Chris O’Brien Lifehouse.
Dr Mendis is a member of Australia and New Zealand Endocrine Surgeons (ANZES) and the Australia and New Zealand Head and Neck Cancer Society (ANZHNCS). He has published widely in peer-reviewed journals, contributed book chapters and is actively involved in training, education and research.
Clinical Interests
Dr Mendis provides expert assessment and surgical management across head and neck, endocrine and oncologic conditions, including:
- Thyroid disorders
- Parathyroid disorders
- Head and neck tumours
- Soft tissue sarcoma
- Advanced skin cancers, including melanoma
- Parotid and salivary gland conditions
- Neck lumps
- Oral cavity lesions and cancers
- Head and neck reconstruction including free tissue transfer and jaw reconstruction
He performs a wide range of specialist procedures, such as:
- Thyroidectomy
- Parathyroidectomy
- Excision of lymph nodes
- Surgical treatment of head and neck cancers
- Skin lesion removal
- Sarcoma surgery
- Reconstruction, including grafts and flaps
- Sentinel lymph node biopsy and nodal dissection (neck, axillary, groin)
