Associate Professor Viraj Kariyawasam is a Senior Gastroenterologist and Endoscopist and holds academic positions at Macquarie University and Western Sydney University. After completing his gastroenterology training at Gosford, Westmead, and Concord Hospitals, Dr. Kariyawasam earned his FRACP in 2011. He further specialized in advanced therapeutic endoscopy and completed a clinical research fellowship in IBD at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital in the UK.
A/Prof. Kariyawasam is widely published and actively involved in teaching and clinical research. He completed his Ph.D. on thiopurines in IBD at the University of Sydney. His practice covers all aspects of gastroenterology and liver disease with expertise in Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and advanced therapeutic endoscopy. He has a special interest in cancer screening and early detection of colorectal, oesophageal, and stomach cancers. He provides advanced surveillance for IBD patients and has expertise in removing precancerous lesions and large polyps endoscopically.
Committed to high-quality patient care, Viraj advocates for Open Access endoscopy to improve accessibility for privately insured patients. He consults from Rouse Hill and Norwest clinics and performs procedures at Pennant Hills Day Surgery, Norwest Private Hospital, Macquarie University Hospital and Somerset Private Hospital.
